At the opening of Amazon On 2026, Virgilio Viana advocates for connectivity and combating deforestation as strategic agendas for Brazil
The opening keynote of the third edition of Amazon On 2026, held in Manaus, addressed the theme "The future will not be decided when the crisis arrives." The Director-General of the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS), Virgilio Viana, emphasized that combating deforestation and adapting to climate change constitute a matter of national economic and strategic interest.
During his address, Viana underscored the urgency of avoiding ecological tipping points in the Amazon Basin and pointed to digital connectivity and access to clean energy as vital links for conservation. Expanding technological infrastructure and network connectivity in remote communities directly enables essential services—such as healthcare and education—while boosting the infrastructure required for socio-bioeconomy value chains.
The presentation highlighted that deploying networks in isolated territories demands cross-sector collaboration among regulatory agencies, governments, the private sector, universities, and local leaders. According to the assessment shared at the forum's opening, transitioning to a sustainable model in the region relies on translating scientific knowledge into public policy and structured investments, grounded in the principle of valuing the standing forest.
